Copia Games for Business

Copia has developed a number of online games and exercises that target specific management and team-playing skills.

These are highly effective as part of a wider training session, and very useful when highlighting issues such as:

  • remote communication
  • the importance of organisation and strategy
  • team co-operation
  • interpreting disparate information

The games are challenging, entertaining, and visually rich.

There are three examples below; Railroad Magnate, The Sales Puzzle, Tiles

RAILROAD MAGNATE

Format
2 teams in opposition
Players
4 – 10 per team
Duration
20 minutes
Key skills

  • co-operation
  • leadership under pressure
  • fast decision-making
  • balancing personal with group interests
  • forward planning.

Railroad magnate challenges two teams to build a railroad through a fictional town, against the clock and each other. There are physical, ecological and budgetary restraints to be considered, and penalties for disregarding them.

Each player is allocated one of four ‘roles’ within the game, and these roles come with certain information relevant to the construction of the railroad. Everyone needs to share their information in order for the team leader to decide where best to lay the railroad track.

  railroad magnate - rules

Laying track in the wrong place can have severe penalties.

  railroad magnate - fine

Although each team cannot see their opponents’ route, they are able to monitor their expenditure.

The winning team is the first to complete their railroad under budget and within the allotted timeframe.

The players have to work together to solve a logic puzzle that relates to a group of salesmen in North America. Each of them is given a number of statements that the others cannot see - only when all the statements are considered together can the puzzle be solved.

sales puzzle - players statement

One player is designated as the ‘controller’ of the game – only this player can see the puzzle matrix.

By piecing together all the information the other players are able to offer, the controller can begin to place the elements of the puzzle into the correct spaces.

sales puzzle - part completed

Key to the gameplay of the puzzle is that only the controller is given an outline of the aim – the remainder of the players are simply offered their respective statements.

TILES

Format
2 teams in opposition
Players
1 – 10 per team
Duration
10 minutes
Key skills
  • Conflict resolution
  • communication
  • challenging assumptions
  • strategic thinking.

Both teams are presented with an identical ‘tiles’ graphic.

tiles - scrambled

Team A is given no instruction whatsoever – the implicit task is to arrange the tiles into a coherent image.

Team B, however, are told that they must simply move the top-left tile to the bottom right square in order to complete the puzzle.

The teams –who cannot contact one another - take it in turns to decide which tile to move. Movements can be seen by all players concurrently.

tiles - on screen instructions

It will soon become clear to Team A that their assumptions about the task in hand are not necessarily correct… will they try to assist Team B, or stick to their original assumption? If they decide to help, how do they do it?
